porsche-993Porsche 993 replaced Type 964 (911), and of course was more sofisticated and brought to it’s almost 70 000 drivers even more driving pleasure. This rear engine, rear wheel drive convertible or coupe, designed by Tony Hatter, basically had 3,6 and 3,8 opposed flat 6 cylinder engines, having from 272 HP to 450 HP (twin-turboed factory tuned GT2 version). Earlyer, Porsche Type 964 engines started from 250 HP.

Actually, both in 1993 and 1998 you could find both model on sale – 964 till the end of 1993, and 996 started in 1998. Porsce purists consider true 911 ended in 1993, with Type 964. 993 was available both with manual ant automatic (tiptronic) gearboxes, 4wd, with ABS, power steering, power windows, 2 airbags, simple or leather, or bucket seats, targa glass-roof and lots of other options. Turbo models are much wider than naturally aspirated, and you can fit 12 inches or even wider rims in the rear arches, and 10″ in front.

As mentioned before, engine range started with 272 HP 3,6 liter euro-2 engine, it’s fuel consumption was from 9 to 18 liters per 100 km. 285 HP tuned 3,6 unit, sometimes called S model (S originally means Sport), and 300 HP pulling 3,8 liter naturally-aspirating power unit. Turboed 3,6 pulls 408HP, and the car itself is even wider, and with additional aerodynamic elements. Fuel consumptions jumps up to 23,5 liters in city, 11,5 in motorways. The maximum is turbo 4S engine with 450 HP 3,6 biturbo, if not to talk about racing versions like RS, RSR, GT2 or tuned by numerous tuning companies.

There are plenty of 993 tuners, that can not only provide it’s own design or GT2, RSR replica body kits, but tune the engine and suspension. Gemballa, WLS, RUF, Cargraphic, Strosek, Techart, EDO-competition among others. F.e. EDO suggests engine tuning program, that will increase engine output to 550 HP and torque to 735 NM between 3500-6500 rpm. You should first get a discount for low-profiled R18 tyres, before starting this engine!

Factory – tuned GT2 had 510 or even 550 HP euro-1 compliant engines, producing 376 g/km of CO2, but of course who cares about environment, when feeding half of thousand horses :) 19 inch alloys, massive rear spoiler and more aerodynamic front one, with additional air inlets for radiators, additional lip and wide arches. GT2 cup racing cars had even more – 621HP, 800 NM 3,8 engine with two K26/24 turbochargers, 380 and 322mm disk brakes, 13″ wide rear wheels etc – and you will find some of these on TheBestPorsche!

The price for 3,6 272HP naturally-aspirated coupe starts at 25 000 eur, for 45 000 you can get 408HP turbo or targa RS (300HP), and you should have something alround 50 000 if you want 450 turbo S model. Of course, it depends on car options, condition, mileage etc.

GT2 Cup racing car with FIA homologation will not be cheaper than 100 000 euros, but it will still be cheaper than RUF CTR2, that aftermarket price is alround 200 000eur.
